In response to significant flooding after major storm events, the City of Elmhurst hired Christopher B. Burke Engineering, Ltd. (CBBEL) to develop a Comprehensive Flood Plan that identified stormwater projects to alleviate flooding in several flood-prone areas of the City, including the residential area known as the College View Study Area. To create flood storage and provide additional protection in this area, the City partnered with Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 to utilize existing open space on the York Community High School campus. These improvements included the construction of a pump-evacuated underground StormTrap system with a new synthetic turfy playing field installed above the structure. This APWA award-winning project provided both valuable flood-reduction benefits to the residents and a significant upgrade to the school’s recreational facilities.
