To address aging infrastructure that was subject to cracking, infiltration, corrosion, and substantial deterioration, CBBEL was hired by the Village of Lombard to rehabilitate approximately 11,700 lineal feet of 90-inch to 108-inch diameter combined sewer and associated manholes using geopolymer spray technology.

The existing non—circular trunkline of a combined sewer system was rehabilitated in place from Lombard Commons Park to the outfall near the Glenbard Wastewater Authority treatment facility within the Village of Lombard. The sewer is predominately located within residential areas but crosses beneath Main Street, the I-355 Tollway, State Route 53 and the Illinois Prairie Path. Additionally, a 30-inch diameter bypass sewer was lined with cured-in-place pipe (CIPP). The catchment area for this system services approximately one-third of the Village’s residents and is a critical piece of infrastructure.

A Phase I Study was conducted to evaluate the most cost-effective, sustainable, and least disruptive solution to rehab the pipe. The feasibility of various methods of rehabilitation were considered, including spray liner, spiral wound, slip lining and CIPP. Factors including constructability, cost, structural strength, accessibility, pipe diameter reduction, bypass requirements, life expectancy, corrosion resistance, staging, and traffic impacts were all considered.

Phase II Engineering consisted of preparation of plans, staging requirements, contract specifications including bypass pumping requirements based on analyzed flow data, and cost estimating. Permits were secured from the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority, Illinois Department of Transportation, and the DuPage County Highway Department. Extensive coordination was completed with the Lombard Park District, Glenbard Wastewater Authority, and the public. CBBEL also assisted the Village with processing paperwork for a low-interest loan through the State Revolving Fund (SRF) Program.
