BNSF Railway Bridge Over the Tri-State Tollway
Project Overview
Improving traffic capacity and the driving experience through one of the busiest sections of the Tollway.
Location
Cook County, IL
Construction Cost
$96 million
Fee
$1.1 million
Client
Illinois Tollway
To accommodate widening of the Tri-State Tollway (I-294), the Illinois Tollway worked with CBBEL to replace the BNSF triple-track railway bridge. CBBEL served as the Drainage Lead and completed Master Plan and Phase II design services for the replacement bridge, which was both taller and longer.
The railway was constrained by existing waterways and nearby Metra stations and the project was adjacent to parks and an important public works facility. Extensive local coordination was undertaken to minimize impacts, facilitate adjacent local projects, and provide aesthetically pleasing results while meeting design and permitting requirements.
