BNSF Pedestrian Underpass
Project Overview
Providing a safe link under at-grade train tracks for pedestrians to access the downtown district.
Location
Western Springs, IL
Construction Cost
$2 million
Fee
$185,000
Client
Village of Western Springs
CBBEL was hired by the Village of Western Springs to construct pedestrian access underneath three at-grade train tracks in its busy downtown district. The pedestrian access provided a safer link between its Park District property on the south, to its pool and residential area on the north side of the tracks.
BNSF constructed precast bridges for the three tracks in the first phase of the project. Then soldier piles were driven, and the earth was excavated out from under the tracks using temporary lagging to hold back the slopes. Retaining walls and a slab were poured to create the pedestrian pathway. Lighting, fiber optic cameras and solar powered flashers for the crosswalks were added for safety and surveillance.
CBBEL coordinated between the Village, BNSF Railroad, ComEd, Illinois Tollway and the Park District to keep the project moving in cooperation with an adjacent Tollway project and Village projects and events.
