The City of Batavia’s River Street Streetscape project improved the downtown area by providing a vibrant, accessible, pedestrian first area. This included the construction the State of Illinois’ first Woornerf. Roughly translated from its Dutch origin as “living Streets”, a woornerf is a curbless roadway that promotes more pedestrian and cyclist use over automotive use. The lack of defined sidewalks, lane lines, traffic control devices, and a low posted speed limit requires that motorists be more alert to their surroundings. This award winning concept was constructed using clay brick pavers, permeable pavement, energy efficient LED light fixtures, abundant landscaping, and various hardscape features.
