ASCE-Illinois Section 2015 Sustainability in Civil Engineering Achievement Award. The City of Chicago’s first Road Diet has balanced the modal use of Lawrence Avenue, providing wider sidewalks and completing the City’s longest designated bike lane street while calming traffic and improving pedestrian crossings. Improvements to the 1.1 mile corridor included narrowing the roadway, pedestrian refuge islands, new lighting, trees, bump-outs with bioswales, drainage improvements, concrete bus pads, resurfacing, and creating the Claremont Avenue plaza.
