Buffalo Creek, a tributary to the Des Plaines River in Wheeling, was experiencing streambank erosion and stability problems. Under the stabilization program, which focuses on nearly five miles of the creek, both structural and bio-technical techniques were used to stabilize and enhance the riparian corridor, reduce the loss of real estate, and improve water quality and aquatic habitat in Buffalo Creek. Much of the funding for this project was provided by grants through the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
